In the closed position, the disc of a triple offset butterfly valve remains perpendicular to the flow direction and is sealed by the valve seat that’s made of metal or non-metallic material. When the handle is turned, the stem connected to the disc moves apart from the seat and positions itself in parallel with the flow direction. As the valve opens, the stem and disc rotate around the same axis to throttle the flow.
